I read it in middle school about 8-10 years ago. This is what I can remember:
1. It is a trilogy
2. It starts out with a few best friends (guys) who escape (to the mountains i think?) when aliens invade earth and make humans their slaves.
How about this one --
Long ago the Tripods, gigantic three-legged machines, descended upon Earth and took control. They used "Caps," administered ceremoniously near each child's 14th birthday, to control humans' brains and keep them docile.
